i-D Interview ☆ The Muse

mermaids, muses, and magic with tim walker

d0160581_21101756.jpg
What was it like working together?

Ben Whishaw: I loved it. I love working with Tim. He knows what he
wants; he has a clear vision of things. So I trust him, really.

d0160581_21104222.jpg

In order to produce a truly inspired piece of work do you find it beneficial to be on the same page creatively as the people around you or does working with people who have different ideas work better?

Tim Walker: I think it's good to be on the same page. Don't you think?

Ben: Absolutely.

Tim: But I think if you're working with someone you have to be very open. Sometimes I get stuck and it's good to ask someone, anyone, ''what can we do to make this better?'' Maybe they are on a different page and thinking about something differently that can really benefit the film or the picture. You never know what someone might say that inspires a whole new way of looking at things, so yeah. That's a good question. I think it's all about being open.

d0160581_21114242.jpg

As a silent film, the axis around which the film revolves is movement - the constrictive movement of Kristen in the tank, the mournful body language of the artist - how much importance, Ben, do you place on movement and how conscious are you of your body in the way you act?

Ben: I think it's very important. If you see an actor not using their body it can be very flat and then it's hard to get into them. It's about being expressive.

d0160581_21121287.jpg
Do you enjoy using your body as a vehicle for expression?

Ben: I do. I love moving and I love dancing and I love physicality in myself and in other people. I really appreciate it.

Do you prefer working with actors who have that same sense of physicality?

Ben: Not at all. I love different people; everyone comes from a different angle. Everyone's a different human so their acting will be different to yours. It's a very personal thing, acting. It comes from within.

d0160581_2112463.jpg

Do you find that you are someone who really immerses yourself in a role, because some actors prefer to put on the mask of another character without really experiencing it?

Ben: I tend to be more instinctive. If I overly analyze…I'm much more interested in being surprised by something and where your intuition takes you. It's that thing of your intuition being faster than your mind. It's about using your instinct to its maximum capacity.

Are you a fan of spontaneity within acting?

Ben: Yeah, I love that. I think it's something I'm trying to achieve more.

d0160581_21133792.jpg

Would you ever want to direct either a film or a play?

Ben: I'm really interested in all of that. Everyone is entitled to have a go, there's no wrong or right with directing. Some people do things; other people talk about doing things. I admire people who do things. I think it takes great courage to put a work out there and see it through.

d0160581_21182544.png

Tim, your work deals with fantasy and fairytale, but how important is it to anchor it in the real and have that human element involved?

Tim: That's a really good question. Fantasy and make believe can't sing unless there is something real that happens within it. That could be a mistake or something that someone adds on the day or the spur of the moment that gives something life. I think that make believe and fantasy can't exist without a hook on reality. If it's all fake and fantastical, it doesn't grip or resonate. Don't you think?

Ben: Without a doubt.

d0160581_6513695.jpg
                                             ziggyradiobear

What do you think it is about the mermaid specifically that is so captivating as an idea? Why does it have more mileage than say the siren or the centaur?

Ben: I think there's a wildness to it which we find very attractive, it's the ocean.

d0160581_14105710.jpg

Ben, how do you feel about watching yourself act?

Ben: Fine, most of the time, these days. I used to hate it and I still don't particularly like it with other people. But I've gotten over it; you have to.

d0160581_20155081.jpg
who is your muse in real life?

Ben Whishaw: Is it bad that I don't know exactly what a muse is? What does it mean?

A person who inspires you.

BW: No I don't think I have a muse. It would change all the time, different things would inspire me.

The characters you play or the words on the page I guess.

BW: Yeah, but anything really can inspire you. I get a lot of inspiration from seeing how the great work. All sorts of things, not necessarily film or theatre.

d0160581_20164597.jpg
Has a character ever changed your perspective on life or taught you something?

BW: Jesus Christ, (laughs) yes probably but I don't know. Everything does, I mean, I couldn't really say. I'm sorry to be evasive but it is very hard to... I don't quite know. I think everything has an impact on you and for the moment that you're doing it does change the way you see things of course because you're inhabiting a different spectacle of something. I'm not sure anything long lasting has ever happened from playing a role.

What's your favourite time period that you've worked in?

BW: I really like medieval. I did a Shakespeare and it was fabulous.

What made it fabulous?

BW: It was the long gowns and it was the crown. (laughs) I think it reminded me of being a child, it's that kind of dressing up. Nothing else is quite that extreme.

d0160581_20161784.jpg
Ben, what are your ambitions in the film space? Particularly, do you want to direct a la Ryan Gosling?

BW: I haven't seen his films so I can't say but yeah I'd be interested to. I'm always aware that maybe everyone thinks that they can do everything and you just can't. Maybe I should just stick to acting. But I'd be lying if I said I didn't dream about it and tinker around with ideas in my head. But that's a very different thing to actually making a film.

What about writing?

BW: I'm not a very good writer. I like other people's work.

d0160581_2016494.jpg
Is there any difference in preparation between a feature film and a short film like this one?

BW: Well there was no time to do anything really. We were just discussing this actually and it's often been great not having time. It's a fine balance always. I enjoyed in this instance not having time and just putting myself in Tim's hands and going on our instincts. In a way that's what's nice about doing a short film because there's less pressure. There's less money so you feel that you can just sort of muck around in a sense. (With a feature) There's so many people working on it and the director must want to make sure everyone's happy with what they've made and must want to keep everyone happy all the time, which can kill it I think. Whereas if everyone's just doing it for themselves...

You've done a few shorts recently, is it important to you to support new talent?

BW: I think it's really exciting, you can find really amazing voices because again, people aren't thinking really commercially, they're just trying to realise an idea. All the shorts I've done I'm really proud of, this one included. They really have a voice and a vision and something distinct about it.

d0160581_20163084.jpg
Ben, is there an element of obsessiveness in one's art that you can relate to? That you see manifested in a character? Does it exist in you? Do you ever go to extremes with what you're doing?

BW: Umm, I don't know. I can't really relate to it in the same way that Tim has just described. No, to be honest.

With your work, do you have a set formula of considerations for accepting or declining a role?

BW: No, I feel very open. The more unexpected, the better I do. I'm more drawn to things that I feel like I can't do or won't be very good at. So no, I don't have a criteria. It's an instinctive thing.

So what is it like being a woman in the film industry?

“Well it is shockingly ridiculous that there are only 7% of the last 250
films that came out where directed by women, so that has got to
change. It is beginning to change, there’s more access to equipment
and young women are going into it. I mean we are 51% of the
population and we have to have films that reflect our stories.
